I'm a US citizen looking to establish Romanian citizenship on my own. My boyfriend was able to get Irish citizenship by finding all his grandmother's papers online and applying on his own, so I hope it is possible to do much the same for myself.
Both my grandparents were born before 1900 in what is now Romania, and both settled in Ohio where they met and married; according to his petition for US citizenship, my grandfather was born in Cucerdea, while according to the same document, my grandmother was born in Galatz. My grandfather was granted US citizenship about 6 weeks before my mother was born.
I have official copies of most of the US documents, including the ship manifest for my grandmother's arrival, as well as their marriage and death documents and the birth, marriage, and death documents for my mother, as well as my own birth certificate.
However, I don't know how to go about obtaining birth certificates for either of my Romanian grandparents. My command of the Romanian language is very thin, mostly house words and nursery rhymes.
What should my next step(s) be? The Romanian Embassy in Washington recommends getting in touch with my nearest Romanian consulate, but the website and email of the Romanian Consulate General of Boston are dead, and the phone number they have online forwards to a number which goes straight to voice mail and the mailbox is full.
